the first week

My first week of garbage free/meat free/electricity saving days wasn't as hard as I expected it to be. I think that the hardest part was trying not to produce garbage. There are so many things that have packaging that I never really realized. I had muffins in my apartment and thought they would be a good breakfast, but then remembered that they were baked in paper cups...thus, producing waste. I have to consciously think about not producing waste, and I think that is better for me, because then I think more about what I'm buying. I do not want to buy something that has a ton of packaging because then I would produce more waste (and find it more difficult to abide by the rules of my 'waste-free' days!). By trying to produce less waste, it is actually helping me in my endeavor to not eat meat. I find that I am actively looking to buy/eat more produce since it doesn't have as much packaging as processed foods. Another reason I like this is because it causes me to eat healthy foods instead of junk food (since I'm cutting out the meat). This is less difficult than I thought it would be and I've found that I actually eat less meat than I thought I did. I wonder, are we including fish and eggs in this? I haven't eaten either on my two days; however I wasn't sure if they were the same thing. Reducing electricity use has also been less difficult than I expected it to be. I think that making these changes not only helps the environment, but is turning out to be much more healthy for me and my life. I hope that I can keep most of the changes up after the end of the project! :)
