For my activist project, I was inspired by the example of a past student who reconstructed and redesigned old clothes. For my personal project, I would like to build on this idea and create a campus event out of it! It would include activities such as a t-shirt surgery booth, recycled arts and crafts, and a clothes swap - somewhat of a miniature trash-to-treasure here on campus! I admire the DIY philosophy and I hope that this event will raise interest and awareness about the way we look at what we throw away or don't use anymore. By reusing old materials and creating "new" articles of clothing and art out of them, hopefully this event can help its participants examine and reduce their consumption as well.
As of now, I'm working on scheduling a time, finding a few volunteers, as well as finding crafts & tutorials and collecting supplies. Here are a few that I've come across so far:
replayground.com
Bottlecap magnets
Tetrapak coin purse
cutoutandkeep.net
Finally, I'm a part of the education committee in SEAK and we are currently working on creating presentations to work on with school-children - I would like to share some of these ideas and projects with them this semester as well!
I LOVE the idea of a clothes swap, that how I acquired most of my vast tshirt collection in high school...
